Northern Virginia medic dies after fall

An Alexandria, Virginia, paramedic has died from a head injury. The 33-year-old man climbed a cement divider on Interstate 395 near the border of Arlington and Alexandria in an attempt to reach a car that was reportedly on fire. In the dark of night, he apparently couldn't see there was a gap between the lanes of the roads, sending him plunging 30 feet into a rock-filled creek in a pedestrian accident.

He was taken to Washington Hospital Center, where he died the following day.

Fatal car accidents among Virginia teens rise in January

Traffic safety advocates have expressed concern that fatal accidents claimed the lives of 11 teenagers in Virginia in the first three weeks of 2012.

Youth of Virginia Speak Out, which works to encourage teenagers to drive safely, issued a report in late January, stressing the need for young people to drive cautiously. The fatalities in the first weeks of the month more than tripled the number of teens who died during the same time in 2011, according to the report.

Valet charged in death of pedestrian

A 26-year-old Virginia man was taken into custody and charged with involuntary manslaughter three months after police said he struck and killed a young woman as he was driving a car while working as a hotel valet. The man was indicted by a grand jury in Richmond, Virginia. After his arraignment in Richmond Circuit Court, he posted a $10,000 bond and was released. He is due to appear at a hearing on Feb. 27.

The fatal accident occurred on Oct. 28, 2011, when the man was driving a hotel guest's car too fast in inclement weather and slammed into the 23-year-old woman on a sidewalk, police said. She was walking on North Fifth Street after meeting friends at a nearby bar.

Alleged drunk driver kills 8-year-old boy

A suspected drunk driver lost control of his car and barreled into a mother and her son recently, killing the 8-year-old boy.

The pedestrian accident occurred as the woman and her son walked home from an Alexandria, Virginia, shopping mall to their home in nearby Lincolnia. She had walked the boy to the mall to play video games after he asked her to take him on a Sunday-afternoon outing.

Hit-and-run driver sought

Northern Virginia residents should know that police are searching for the driver of a car that killed a suburban Washington, D.C., area couple as the pair crossed Oxon Hill Road in a nearby county.

While there were some witnesses to the fatal accident, they were not able to capture the license plate number of the vehicle involved. Witnesses could only describe the vehicle that hit the couple as a gray compact car. It likely has damage to the front end.

Driver receives 20-year sentence for triple fatality

The 20-year-old driver whose three passengers died after he crashed his car received a 20-year prison sentence for causing the fatal accident. The man, from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, was shuttling his three friends to parties on May 15, 2011, when the accident occurred. Alcohol was served at the events, which had no parental supervision.

The 20-year-old man pleaded guilty to three counts of vehicular manslaughter and one count of leaving the scene of an accident. He will not be eligible for parole until 2017.

Pedestrian dies of internal injuries from car accident

A man hit by a car in Fairfax, Virginia, has died, leaving his family to question if doctors gave him proper treatment.

The 66-year-old victim in the pedestrian accident was taken to a hospital, where he underwent scans. He reported at the hospital that he had soreness in his knee, elbow and back, and he left the hospital with crutches and pain medication. Five days later, he died. The report by the state's chief medical examiner showed the man died of a lacerated liver that he suffered as a result of the accident.

Delays in DUI death case add to victims' relatives' pain

The relatives of a pair of adult siblings, who died in a head-on collision last summer, are waiting for results from state officials and a Prince Edward County, Virginia, court. A preliminary hearing for a 21-year-old driver accused of causing the crash was set and delayed twice.

Prosecutors say the state forensic laboratory has not yet completed toxicology tests related to the case of the suspected wrongful deaths.

Alcohol and speeding likely causes of crash that left teen dead

Police believe a single-vehicle auto accident that claimed the life of a teenager likely resulted from drunk driving and speeding. Charges related to the fatal accident are pending against a Virginia Beach driver, who reportedly spun a car out of control in Charles City County, Virginia, on a Saturday night.

A deputy from the Charles City County sheriff's department reported that he observed a reckless driver on Route 106 at about 7:30 p.m. The deputy attempted to pull over the Audi A4, which prompted the car driver increase his speed and flee the scene.

Two suits filed against deputy's estate after fatal bus crash

A Frederick County, Virginia, woman is suing the estate of a man who died when his car crashed into the school bus she was driving. The bus driver claims the head-on collision on Shawnee Drive in Winchester was caused by driver negligence, although police blamed the fatal accident on icy roads.

The $100,000 lawsuit, filed to recover medical costs and lost wages, is one of two suits against the estate of the former sheriff's deputy who died, along with his 11-year-old daughter, in the accident. The mother of the deceased child has also filed a wrongful death suit against the estate administrator.
