Two die in crash after car runs stop sign

A male motorist and a 22-year-old female passenger recently died in a car crash in Bedford County, Virginia, that occurred after a female motorist ignored a stop sign. The fatal accident took place at the intersection of Virginia 122 and eastbound Joppa Mill Road. The female passenger who died was riding in the Plymouth Breeze that ran the stop sign. The male motorist who died was the 75-year-old driver of a Chevrolet pickup truck struck by that car.

The wrongful death of the two occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m. The male motorist's wife and the car's female driver both suffered serious injuries in the collision. A sergeant from the Virginia State Police indicated that there would be criminal charges for the driver who caused the accident by ignoring her duty to stop her vehicle at the stop sign.

Passenger killed in highway accident

A 57-year-old male passenger was recently killed in a truck accident that occurred in the early morning hours close to Hillsville, Virginia. The accident took place at about 12:50 a.m. The man who died was traveling in a car driven by his wife, going in a northern direction on Interstate 77. The accident ultimately involved three vehicles and three separate collisions.

They traveled past a tractor trailer, when their car went off of the highway and hit a guardrail a number of times putting it in the midst of the northbound lanes facing south. Both the driver and her husband got out of the car, but that man returned to retrieve his cell phone from the vehicle. As he did so, the car was struck by the tractor trailer and pushed down the road approximately 100 yards, after which the car was again hit, this time by a 2001 Peterbilt.

Cause of fatal accident at sobriety checkpoint not determined

Terming the death of a motorist in an auto accident at a drunk driving checkpoint on U.S. 4460 "suspicious," police are continuing their investigation into the causes of the crash. The 25-year-old male motorist rammed his Honda CRV into the back of a truck that had slowed down at the checkpoint, which was set up close to the Bedford County and Campbell County line.

A spokesman for the Virginia State Police stated that the man's vehicle was going approximately 50 miles per hour at the time of the accident. The truck he was in was a Ford F150, being driven by a 44-year-old male motorist. He evidently collided with a guardrail near the checkpoint before plowing into the truck.

More pedestrians getting hit by cars and trucks

An increasing number of people out for a walk are getting injured or killed in a pedestrian accident. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that approximately 70,000 pedestrians were injured by cars, trucks or other vehicles in 2010. A frightening total of 4,280 pedestrians met an untimely death that year in traffic accidents.

There are a number of reasons for this, including speeding vehicles and motorists driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs (both illegal substances and abused prescription medications). Distracted motorists who are heavily involved in talking on their cell phones, sending or receiving text, or surfing the Internet take their eyes off of the road and may not even see pedestrians before they hit them.

Car plows into 60 pedestrians

Approximately 60 hikers participating in a parade in Damascus, Virginia were injured in a pedestrian accident when an elderly motorist's vehicle plowed into them. The accident occurred at approximately 2:10 p.m. during an annual event that celebrates the Appalachian Trail.

While no one died, at least three people were injured severely enough that emergency responders felt the need for helicopters to fly them quickly to local medical facilities for treatment. 12 to 15 other injured pedestrians were rushed to hospitals via ambulance soon after the incident. All other injured victims received first aid at the scene of the crash.

Motorist killed on dangerous stretch of road

A 32-year-old man was recently killed in a fatal accident that occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. in Chesapeake, Virginia, on Elbow Road. The car crash occurred on a stretch of road where a local resident says there have been numerous similar accidents over approximately the last three years, with vehicle occupants frequently thrown from their vehicles.

The scene of these accidents is where there is a bend in the road. The road is only two lanes at that location, and it is described as exceedingly narrow, with the road lacking shoulder on either the left or right sides. The posted speed limit is 45 m.p.h., which may be alright for driving on the road when it is going straight, but some say the problem which gives rise to repeated accidents is that when a sudden bend in the road is encountered, it is then too late to slow down.

High school senior girl killed in car rollover

A 19-year-old female senior at Mathews High School died recently in a vehicle rollover accident. She was traveling east in Mathews, Virginia, in her 1996 Ford Explorer. On Route 14, as it was coming up on Route 683, her car veered off the road, and when the 19-year-old driver attempted to get back on the road, she over-corrected, and the car rolled over a number of times.

State police investigators stated that she was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. As a result, she was flung from the car and suffered critical injuries. While emergency personnel rushed to the scene, they were not able to revive her. She was pronounced dead at the crash site.

Young men recover after Churchville crash

In Staunton, Virginia, donations have poured in, all in an effort to help defray the cost of medical bills for two young men who were involved in a serious just recently. However, one of the young men could seek further financial help with his growing medical bills by filing a civil lawsuit against the driver responsible.

The car accident has given way to a feel--good story in the town, where men and women from around the country are offering their financial support and words of encouragement for the families of two men — ages 19 and 18 — that were involved in a single--vehicle accident.

Specific type of accident far too common

Car accidents are not necessarily confined to the roads and they do not have to involve high speeds to cause serious injury or even wrongful death. Individuals in Virginia, and throughout the rest of the country, have sustained serious or fatal injuries as a result of being backed over by a vehicle whose driver did not see them or was not paying attention.

A Glen Allen woman lost her daughter, age 2, to this type of car accident in 2005. A contractor's truck backed over the girl in the family's own driveway. The devastated woman vowed to press lawmakers to make a change that would ensure this does not happen to other families in the future.

Elderly Richmond man causes devastating accident

It is very important for states to take steps to ensure that all of their licensed drivers are competent behind the wheel. So many times, we hear of lawmakers who are afraid to strip an elderly or disabled person of their driving privileges in fear of harming the person's dignity.

Still, these drivers can present a hazard out on the roadways, sparking accidents that could cause a fellow motorist's wrongful death.
