A man hit by a car in Fairfax, Virginia, has died, leaving his family to question if doctors gave him proper treatment.
The 66-year-old victim in the pedestrian accident was taken to a hospital, where he underwent scans. He reported at the hospital that he had soreness in his knee, elbow and back, and he left the hospital with crutches and pain medication. Five days later, he died. The report by the state's chief medical examiner showed the man died of a lacerated liver that he suffered as a result of the accident.
The accident occurred when the man was hit by a Honda Civic being driven by a 44-year-old woman. The man was legally crossing a road in the crosswalk, with the "walk" sign illuminated, when he was struck as the woman was attempting to make a left turn. Police cited the driver for failing to give the right of way to a pedestrian walking in a crosswalk. Police said neither driving under the influence nor speeding contributed to the accident.
Immediately after the accident, the man said he was well, but he did wind up seeking medical care, despite not having insurance. When he did go to the hospital, he spent about seven hours there before being sent home. Just days later, the man reported to his family that he had back pain, chills and blood in his urine. He was transported back to the medical facility via ambulance and died the following day.
His family, which consists of his wife and eight adult children, said they have met with a lawyer and will consider legal action. It is likely that the hospital could argue that they did all they could, and may blame the female driver for the man's injuries. No matter who is held accountable, it's important that the victim's family get the support it needs.
